MIAMI University in Oxford, Ohio of course! We are learning our way and here's what we have learned so far...
Oxford is a true college town. Nevertheless, its out in the middle of the cornfields. It has a small, beautiful, old downtown with brick roads. Downtown is about a 4 block stretch and referred to as "Uptown". It is just over 1/2 a mile from our condo - very walkable. Uptown is the social center with plenty of different little restaurants to satisfy the 20,000 student population.
"They" say Miami Univeristy is called "the Harvard of the Midwest". The university attacts an upper crust crowd, almost like a private school student body. Herb and I certainly admire the way all the buildings match, new and old. The architecture is all very similar, everything from hotels, to dorms, to rec centers to the parking garages. It is all made out of the same rich red brick. Campus is very attractive and has lots of mature trees and walking paths.
One thing to look for in Oxford are the house names. A tradition is to name off-campus houses and put a sign on the facade displaying the name. It's fun to drive around and see all the house names, some named after the roads in which they are located. For example, Beech Street has houses named "Beeches and Cream", "Life's a Beech", "Beech Balls", and "Beech House". The list is endless! I have to admit, at first glance it looked like these were businesses. I had to wonder what kind of business offerings were "Pink Panty Droppers" and "Tequila Mockingbird"?
We are still trying to think of a name for our condo, stay tuned! For now the top runner is Cedar Village Relived, lol!
